Photography

The camera as a practice of mindfulness.

The Eye

Seeing as
practice

I have been fascinated with wildlife since I was a kid. My parents and siblings often tell me stories of me catching frogs and keeping them in my pocket and then releasing them in front of people to spook them out. Ever since I remember life, I have been fascinated with cicadas, snakes, snails, spiders, flying squirrels, and other wildlife I saw in Shimla, India. I also had a natural gift to be able to track animals, and to some extent predict their next moves. Wildlife has been very kind to me though, and never hurt me, even when sometimes I crossed the lines I shouldn't have, like getting too close to venomous snakes. I did learn to respect their boundaries and keep my distance as I grew older.

However, my facination for photography developed when I got into motorsports. I used to love getting my pictures clicked, especially while high speed action, like jumps on my motorcycle, wheelies, and taking very fast corners. Not many photographers had the skill to get a great shot, but one of the things that my father taught me was to operate an SLR camera, which I still have with me. I learned to click high shutter high speed shots first, and then started carrying my camera as I interacted with wildlife, and that naturally became my go-to favorite activity since the past couple of decades. There are very few animals that I have not captured with my camera.

Photography taught me patience, an eye for looking out, and also connected me to many people who share the passion. The act of putting a camera to your eye requires you to be fully present, to slow down, to actually look at what is in front of you. Everything else is technique.

I shoot wildlife, landscapes, people, and the indefinable territory between. I also started making my own music videos, and have shot for a few bands as well. What I'm always looking for is the moment when the light decides to mean something.
