Pidgin Review (Instant Messaging Software)

Pidgin Instant Messaging Software

Instant Messaging is the heart of my business. I spend more time on Instant Messaging with my clients than I spend writing emails or making phone calls. Since some of my clients like to use Google Talk, the others prefer Windows Live Messenger, AIM, Yahoo Messenger and Skype. So to be available to all my clients I need to make sure I am logged into all these clients at all times.

With an average of around 30,000K memory usage by any of the above clients, imagine the amount of memory my computer would use for all the IM clients run together. Besides that, it is also difficult to manage so many messengers and windows at times, specially when you are chatting with more than 3-4 friends at the same time.

So I began to search for an Instant Messaging Client that would allow me to log into all of my accounts, namely Google Talk, Windows Live Messenger, Yahoo Messenger and AIM at the same time and let me communicate with my clients, friends and family at the same time. I tried 3-4 such products before I finally tried my hand on a tool called Pidgin Instant Messaging Software, which I must say, ended my search for good.

Pidgin allows me to log into my AIM, Bonjour, Gadu-Gadu, ICQ, IRC, Jabber/XMPP, Lotus Sametime, MSN Messenger, MySpaceIM, Novell GroupWise Messenger, QQ, SILC, SIMPLE, Yahoo! and Zephyr accounts all at once. By configuring my accounts once during setup, I now got rid of all other instant messaging softwares I earlier used. Also interestingly, I noticed at peak times, the memory usage of Pidgin averages between 25,000K - 35,000K, which is around the same amount that any one IM client would use.

So I now talk to my clients on Google Talk, while simultaneously chatting with friends and clients on Yahoo, Windows Live or AIM. Tell you the truth, sometimes I don't even know if this friend or client belongs to my Google list or Yahoo, it is that simple. The interface of Pidgin is awesome too, it is very simple, like Google Talk, and yet loaded enough to accommodate all the features of the services listed above. I currently use Windows Vista on my PC, but Pidgin is also compatible with Linux, BSD, and other UNIX systems.

Pidgin is a Free Software and can be downloaded at As Pidgin is an ever growing product, it undergoes several new developments very often. To read about the latest update on Pidgin, visit Pidgin News.
