What kind of products sell on Twitter?

Marketing follows consumers to market and promote products that the consumers demand. But Twitter is a place with people from all over the world that demand different things but yet, there are some interesting trends that have been seen on Twitter lately.

Dell Computers promoted their computers and were able to sell 3 Million dollars worth of computers on Twitter and yet many other companies have not made a dime.

As a personal observation I have seen IPSwitch (@IPSwitchFT), creators of WS_FTP - a leading FTP Client, bring a lot of awareness about their products, provide technical support and answer questions on Twitter. Even though I am not sure of how much money they have generated from Twitter since they started their promotions, but I have personally seen them sell successfully to Twitterers, which shows an increase in sales. The fact is, you need to stand behind your products and promote them by listening to the concerns your potential customers have, and providing solutions to those, and of course by offering specials like coupons, discounts, etc like Dell did.

This article is not about How to Sell on Twitter, but rather on What to sell on Twitter so let's move forward. Even though I might not be able to lay out the winning products that do sell on Twitter (as of Sep 1 2009), all I could say is that we are now doing a lot of testing to see what sells on Twitter and what does not. Following are the categories where we have NOT seen much success. Even though it is possible to attract a huge traffic (close to 2K uniques a day) for free, the conversion % is still negligible:

1. Flowers
2. Pet Products
3. Cellular Phones
4. Cell Phone Accessories

We are testing many other categories and as we get more data, I will post here. But so far I just like the idea of being able to generate a huge traffic with no investment at all. I will soon do a report on how you can get the same traffic, what you can do with the traffic and what categories of Affiliate Products to promote and which ones to stay away from.

So far the Music industry seems to be converting better than others and with our recent promotions, we are hoping to see much higher conversions soon. Also Musical instruments seem to be getting some extra traffic and low conversions. We are intensively testing out garments and fashion products and since that industry is really huge, it might be a little while before we can talk about the results.
